At Home  

  1. Read, Comment, and Study: OGLR Ch 4 and 5 (Comments due for BOTH on website by 9 pm,  Monday June 14)
  2. Begin Scrapbook → Seek and Find 10-15 clippings for Summer Scrapbook AND bring to class on June 23, 2014 (see description below; rubric to come)

Summer Scrapbook Project (DUE in class on June 30, 2014; 10% of grade)

Step 1: Seek and Find Type A and Type B Clippings :: BRING to class on June 23, 2014

    1. Type A Clippings: Images (At least ONE clipping)
      1. You must find advertisements/images using classical graphics that relate to Latin, Greek, or classical civilization.
      2. FOCUS: PICTURES with classical themes or references, e.g. columns, arches, Roman Numerals, direct/indirect mythological references etc.
      3. SOURCES: Modern magazines, newspapers, business cards, and brochures.
      4. FORMAT: Find and cut out image. You must also write 1-3 sentences describing the ad and why you chose it.
    2. Type B Clippings: Words (At least NINE distinct clippings, ONE must be from Greek root)
      1. You are required to find examples of English words derived from Latin and/or Greek in context.
      2. FOCUS: WORDS with Latin and/or Ancient Greek roots.**see below for Greek roots**
      3. SOURCES: Modern magazines, newspapers, business cards, and brochures.
      4. INFORMATION: You must also use a dictionary to…
        1. LOOK UP and WRITE OUT/PRINT OUT the dictionary entry
        2. PROVIDE the LATIN/GREEK root word and its meaning

NOTA BENE: NO internet clippings because you can find anything there. Too easy! The point is to see how these images are around you in oftentimes very subtle ways…

Step 2: Finalize

    1. CREATE A SCRAPBOOK that organizes and displays the clippings you found in step one.
    2. Make it fun, original, colorful, but informative and easy-to-read.
    3. See reverse for rubric.

Summer Scrapbook Grading Rubric (DUE in class on June 30, 2014; 10% of grade)

Maximum Score = 50

No late scrapbooks will be accepted.

BASICS (25 pts) Your scrapbook must:

• Have 10 clippings total — 9 words, 1 photo (1 pt each) 10 pts
• Include dictionary entry for NINE English words derived from Latin or Greek roots, include the definition for the English derivative (1/2 pt each) 4.5 pts
• Include the dictionary information for Latin root of NINE derivatives (1/2 pt each) 4.5 pts
• Include brief explanation (1-3 sentences) for ONE of the clippings of images 1 pt
• Scrapbook pages are connected to create a booklet (with staples, string, or thread) 5 pts

AESTHETICS (25 pts) To achieve the highest possible points, the scrapbook must::

• Be complete 5 pts
• Be neat 5 pts
• Be colorful (use markers, pencils, highlighters, etc.) 5 pts
• Be creative and interesting without being confusing 5 pts
• Be balanced in terms of layout and color 5 pts

  • Collaboratively develop additional “Ground Rules” based on two questions: a) Why are you here? and b) What is necessary in order for you to accomplish your goals?

Objective:

By the end of this activity, students will:

  • Know the terms: OGLR, “Read, Comment, and Study,” “Prepare to Share,” “Research”
  • Know my email address and website
  • Know the summer’s overarching essential question
  • Learn the basic history and evolution of Latin

Read, Comment, and Study: OGLR Ch 1

– Be sure to write down password, visit my website and go to the appropriate page for your section, read the guidelines carefully, and post a comment about the reading by the deadline indicated.

Prepare to Share: State, University, and National Mottos in Latin 

– Research the Latin Motto assigned to you. Prepare to share the following:

~ the actual Latin motto
~ its translation into English
~ and its vocabulary (i.e., what does each word mean) and
~ its origin (i.e., how does the motto relate to ancient culture/literature).
