January 26 – February 2, 2015 – The Hunger Games

Having read the story of “Theseus,” we will watch the movie “The Hunger Games” to identify similarities and differences between the movie’s character, plot, and setting and those of the original Greek Myth. Be prepared to compare and contrast the two stories.

We will also watch the movie to focus on the following Common Core standards:

RL.11-12.2 theme development

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.5 Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure specific parts of a text (e.g., the choice of where to begin or end a story, the choice to provide a comedic or tragic resolution) contribute to its overall structure and meaning as well as its aesthetic impact.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.1 Write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.11-12.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
